Most people don't think much about what happens before the sod goes down. But that prep work - the grading, the soil work, the fine finish - is what determines how your yard looks and functions for years to come. Skip it or rush it, and you end up with low spots that hold water, uneven ground that beats up your mower, and grass that never quite takes the way it should.

We just wrapped up two sod prep jobs in Alvin, and both required getting the grade dialed in before anything green hits the ground. That means bringing in fill material, spreading and working it into a consistent surface, and finishing it smooth and even across the entire area. We run a tracked Kubota skid steer fitted with a soil conditioner attachment - that's the piece of equipment with the tines and finishing rake on the front. It breaks up compacted soil and leaves behind a clean, level bed that sod roots into easily.

One of the sites had a large open area beside a metal shop building that needed to be built up and leveled out. The other was a residential yard being prepped around an existing driveway and paver fire pit area - tighter work that required paying close attention to how the ground tied into the surrounding concrete and hardscape. Different jobs, same standard.

Getting the grade right isn't just about looks. It's about water moving away from your foundation the way it's supposed to. It's about having a yard surface that's actually comfortable to walk on and easy to maintain. When sod goes down on a properly graded surface, it roots faster, grows more consistently, and holds up better long-term. That's the whole point of doing the prep work correctly.

This is the kind of work we do on a regular basis across the Alvin area. Whether it's a new build that needs finish grading before landscaping, or an existing yard that's developed problem spots over time, we have the equipment and the experience to get the ground ready the right way.
